Staging

Papile classification

A grading of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants into four stages by how far the bleeding extends on cranial ultrasound.

Also called: Papile, Papile grading

Stages

  1. I

    Germinal matrix hemorrhage

Blood confined to the germinal matrix, also called subependymal hemorrhage, without blood entering the ventricle.

  2. II

    Intraventricular blood without ventricular enlargement

Blood within the ventricle but no enlargement of the ventricle.

  3. III

    Intraventricular blood with ventricular enlargement

Blood within the ventricle together with enlargement of the ventricle.

  4. IV

    Periventricular hemorrhagic infarction

Bleeding into the periventricular white matter beside the ventricle, historically called grade IV.
