ROP stage

The grading of retinopathy of prematurity by the appearance of the junction between vascularized and avascular retina, from a flat line to total retinal detachment.

Stages

  1. 1

    Demarcation line

    A flat demarcation line separates vascularized retina from the avascular periphery.

  2. 2

    Ridge

    The line has thickened into a raised ridge at the junction.

  3. 3

    Extraretinal fibrovascular proliferation

    New vessels and fibrous tissue grow from the ridge into the vitreous.

  4. 4

    Partial retinal detachment

    The retina is partly detached from the wall.

    4A
    Detachment sparing the macula.
    4B
    Detachment involving the macula.
  5. 5

    Total retinal detachment

    The retina is completely detached.
