Branching air-filled bronchi seen as dark tubular shadows within opaque, airless lung on a chest radiograph.

Found
Seen on chest radiography as branching tubular lucencies within an area of opaque lung.
Normal
Not visible, because aerated bronchi do not contrast with aerated lung tissue.
Abnormal
Air-filled bronchi outlined against airless, opacified lung.
Suggests
Airspace disease; in a preterm infant, respiratory distress syndrome.
