Plus disease
A retinal sign in retinopathy of prematurity in which the vessels of the posterior pole become abnormally tortuous and dilated, marking severe vascular activity.
- Found
- Dilated retinal examination by indirect ophthalmoscopy, comparing the posterior pole vessels with a standard published photograph.
- Normal
- Vessels of the posterior pole with normal calibre and a straight, even course.
- Abnormal
- Vessels of the posterior pole that are abnormally tortuous and dilated, at least as marked as the standard published photograph.
- Suggests
- Severe vascular activity in retinopathy of prematurity; in zone I it identifies type 1 disease.
- Exceptions
- Pre-plus disease is vascular abnormality that stops short of the standard published photograph.
