Strawberry tongue
A red tongue with prominent papillae, first through a white or yellow coating and then over a bare red surface, seen in scarlet fever, Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.

- On inspection of the tongue.
- Normal
- A pink tongue whose papillae are not prominent.
- Abnormal
- Enlarged reddened papillae standing out through a white or yellow coating, later on a bare red surface.
- Suggests
- Scarlet fever, Kawasaki disease or toxic shock syndrome.
- Exceptions
- Not specific to any one of them; the accompanying features decide which disease it is.
